Care for Creation: Learning from St. Francis of Assisi
St. Francis of Assisi looked at creation not as something to possess, but as something to love. He called the sun his brother, the moon his sister, and the Earth his mother. For him, creation was a family to which we belong. Today, this vision has become increasingly urgent. Climate change, pollution, deforestation, loss of biodiversity and excessive consumption remind us that the Earth is not an unlimited resource. When creation suffers, human life suffers too—especially the lives of the poor and vulnerable. Care for creation, therefore, is not simply about planting trees or avoiding plastic. It asks us to examine how we live, what we consume, what we waste and what we leave behind for future generations. St. Francis invites us to rediscover simplicity, gratitude and respect for every form of life. His message challenges a culture that constantly asks, “What more can I have?” and invites us instead to ask, “What can I protect, preserve and give back?” The Earth does not need occasional admiration; it needs daily responsibility. Small choices—using resources carefully, reducing waste, protecting water, respecting nature and consuming consciously—become meaningful when they grow into a way of life. Perhaps the most important change begins not around us, but within us: to stop seeing ourselves as owners of creation and begin living as its caretakers. In the spirit of St. Francis of Assisi, may we learn again to walk gently upon the Earth—receiving with gratitude, using with responsibility and leaving enough for those who come after us.
